Joint Statement by the MERCOSUR Signatory States and the European Commission on the Conclusion of the Association Agreement Negotiations
Joint Statement by the MERCOSUR Signatory States – Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay – and the European Commission on the Conclusion of the Association Agreement Negotiations (December 6, 2024)
The Signatory States of MERCOSUR—the Argentine Republic, the Federative Republic of Brazil, the Republic of Paraguay, and the Oriental Republic of Uruguay—and the European Commission announced, during the 65th MERCOSUR Summit (Montevideo, December 6), the conclusion of negotiations on an Association Agreement between the two regions, following more than two decades of talks.
Building on the progress achieved over the past decades and up to June 2019, MERCOSUR and the European Commission have, since 2023, engaged in an intensive negotiation process aimed at adapting the agreement to the challenges faced at national, regional, and global levels. Over the past two years, both parties have participated in seven rounds of negotiations, among other meetings, and have committed to reviewing key issues.
In light of the progress made since 2023, the Association Agreement between MERCOSUR and the European Union is now ready for legal review and translation. Both blocs are committed to completing these steps in the coming months, with a view to signing the agreement in the near future.
